McFired! Isaiah Washington Fired From Grey's Anatomy

Friday June 8, 2007
Has karma finally reared its ugly head? TMZ and our very own Celebrity Gossip site are reporting that Isaiah Washington has received his walking papers from ABC's mega hit series Grey's Anatomy. Washington's publicist Howard Bragman told TMZ that the actor received word from Shonda Rhimes that he has been fired due to what was described as a "pattern of problematic behavior." That behavior would be the whole Isaiahgate scandal that began with a fight on the set with Patrick Dempsey in October and continuing after the Golden Globes in January. Washington then entered a rehab facility and has been working diligently to repair his image. It seemed as though things had quieted down on the set, but I guess in the end they thought it best to keep the wheels running smoothly.

The actor released the following statement in response to his firing:
"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore."
There is a light at the end of this dark tunnel -- T.R. Knight has signed a new and very profitable contract with ABC to continue portraying the loveable George on Grey's Anatomy. I wonder if Washington's firing had anything to do with Knight's new contract?

I think that Isaiah is a great actor. He was making amends to the gay community with his Tv spots on this subject. Gray’s Anatomy will probabley fall apart as the writers cannot keep up the weekley schedule.

I’m not so sure what Isaiah’s sins were, however, I’m sure he regrets committing them. I looked forward every week to that ensemble. He will be missed by those of us who appreciate his talent.

Isaiah is a great actor and I loved him on the show. However, his constant stupidity in front of the press and his fans could not be ignored. Hearing a few of the horrible things come out of his mouth leads me to wonder what he must have been like to work with. He got himself fired.

(5) Tod Jonson says:

Washington has been annoying for a long time, enough so that my family had stopped watching “Grey’s” for some time now. Beligerance is most apparant, and what is there to like under those circumstances. We probably will return to watch “Grey” now that we don’t have to put up with him.

There was a day when free speech was allowed even if not ever one agreed. This is one more example of how sad the world is and how little free speech is valued.

Now that Isaiah Washington will no longer be on Grey’s Anatomy, My friends and I will no longer watch it. we will find another program to watch instead.

(8) Sarah says:

I’d rather George left than Burke. At least then the stupid Izzy.George storyline couldn’t continue. I just don’t buy it.
If Isaiah Washington is fired, I really hope they don’t get another actor in to play his part. They’re never as good as the originals, it would ruin it.

(9) Terri Coward says:

Grey’s has been my favorite since day one although , the Izzy , George storyline is making me sick. To get rid of Burke over a statement he made and then apologized for is total puke…. Send George away. I use to like him also until his character changed. Who are you trying to convince me or you. He doesnt’t like women at all, now your giving him 2. You will loose alot of viewers this season.

Here, here, Mark!!! (comment #6)

My daughter and I flipped when we heard Isaiah would not be back — I can’t imagine another actor playing Burke and what in the world is going to happen with Christina? Are they going to bring the British guy back??

I also agree with Terri Coward, Sarah and am beginning to feel like Jos about not watching the show anymore.

Sheesh… the Izzy/George thing has totally ticked me and my family off — whatever happened to her soul connection with Denny — wasn’t he the love of her life? Or is he yet another casualty of our short-attention span culture?

Before TR Knight came out, we loved his interaction with Callie — afterward, it was so-so, but still somewhat believable — but when the Izzy/George mess began it was just too much. For the first time my family began complaining about the show.

. . . and now this.

It’s been suggested we might watch the the Adison spin-off instead — but we don’t watch alot of tv, and Gray’s was our favorite show.

(11) Sammy Lee says:

At Least I.Thomas brought some intelligence to the male gender in Grey’s.
He Seemed to have more self control and morals than all the other characters combined. Grey’s is becoming more and more like “Scrubs” Every day!Creepy, Sleazy, Immoral, unbelieveable & DUMB & DUMMER! I guess it’s time to swear off the show and find something more enlightening to do with my time. I say the writers and producers of the show need to GET A LIFE- your own life, Instead of trying to live out your sexless lives through your imaginary friends!

(12) Sylvia says:

This leaning to “free speech” that some people are talking doesn’t wash up against slander. So Isaiah apologized it doesn’t lessen the impact of what Knight would feel every time he had to be on the set, in the studio or in front of the camera with somebody so obviously homophobic. I was really tired of Isaiahs character long before this happened. I just got tired of his self centered behavior. It seems to me that the actor didn’t have to act much to play the part or too much of the part rubbed off on him. It’s time for Susan Ohs character to have a better partner anyway.

(13) jan says:

It must be awful to live under such scrutiny. And the whole thing is since you can’t believe half of what you read nobody really knows if he is a really an unpleasant jerk. Anyhow, I thought he was a tremendous actor and I totally loved his character. However, now they can do a whole new storyline for Christina so I guess that is good.

(14) Tracy says:

My family will find another show since Isaiah Washington is gone. It is to bad that his efforts were not taken lightly. It takes a big man to admit they were wrong and a even bigger man to do something about it.

(15) Elaine MacDonald says:

I can’t believe that they fired him. i think that the show is going to fall apart. i mean first when merideth almost was dead and then with izzy and george and now burke leaving christina at the church. i mean what is happening to this show. who will replace Isaiah. I love this show. I think that Grey’s Anantomy rocks. but…. How are they going to bring the show back? They were ging to basicly get ride of T R Knight by having him fail his exames and now that Isaiah’s charactor left Christina. I mean whoever is changing all of this? I think that they should see how this season starts off and give Isaiah a nother chance. i hope that they can bring the show back to life and make is as terrific as the first 2 seasons.
