Television's Latest Cancellation: The Golden Globes
Monday January 7, 2008
If we've learned one thing from the entertainment world, it's that absolutely anything is possible. With that in mind, if someone had asked me six months ago if I thought a major awards ceremony such as the Golden Globes could get canceled, barring some sort of national crises, I would never have believed it possible. Never say never in this business -- the Golden Globe Awards ceremony has been canceled.
Hot on the heels of the WGA stating that no waiver would be granted to the Hollywood Foreign Press and Dick Clark Productions, the SAG made an announcement last Friday about the actors refusing to cross the picket line for the ceremony. Despite those announcements, NBC appeared to hold firm on their decision to go ahead with the Golden Globes. Wisdom clearly prevailed over the weekend and instead of the two-hour ceremony, NBC will air an hour-long press conference announcing the winners.
Jorge Camara, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, made the following statement:
"We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007's outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television."Could the February 24 Academy Awards face the same fate as the Golden Globes? If the strike isn't resolved by then, it's a very real possibility since the WGA has already stated that no waiver would be given for the Oscars.
