The CW Casts Vampire Diaries

From Dracula to our current obsession with the Twilight series of books and movies, once thing is for sure -- we just can't get enough of those sexy vampires! Our newest fixation is coming to the CW (possibly this fall) with Vampire Diaries and the major roles have finally been cast....
The show is based on a series of books written by L.J. Smith, and tells the story of a high school girl named Elena who falls in love with the very mysterious Stefan, who happens to be a centuries-old vampire. Stefan and his brother Damon have a tumultuous relationship thanks to another woman who came between them many years ago. Their relationship goes from bad to worse when Elena captures the attention of both men and an epic battle for her heart ensues.
Variety reports that former Lost star Ian Somerhalder has snagged the role of Damon. Nina Dobrev (Degrassi: The Next Generation) has been cast to play Elena and Paul Wesley (Everwood) joins the cast as the 200-year-old Stefan. Dawson's Creek mastermind Kevin Williamson will be the executive producer for the series.

I’m going to love this I already know. I just got done finished with the books when I found out that they were making it a TV show,so there is no way to explain how excited I am. I just hope that it doesn’t fail.

I’ll give it a shot, Cause Im obcessed with vampires…But if the CW thinks it’ll have Sucess even half what TrueBlood and Twilight Do, they’ve got to be crazy…WOHOOO Trueblood returns this June!!!! AHhhhhh Im so excited!!!
Ok Nina Dobrev cant play Elena cause isnt Elena supposed to be blonde? Paul Wesley would be a good Stefan. And Ian Somerhalder would be a good Damon. just Nina Dobrev cant be an elena she doesnt have the look.
MOONLIGHT was the BEST vampire show, and it didn’t make it. Hopefully CW will show more wisdom than CBS did!
This sounds like a bad idea. I mean, I love vampires, don’t get me wrong, especially the amazing Edward from Twilight. However, this sounds like an exact copy from the Twilight series from someone who wants to make a lot of money and get famous quick. But, I can’t really judge the show until I see it for myself. I mean, it could be interesting.
As someone else posted, The Vampire Diaries came out way before Twilight was even thought of. I used to read the books over and over again, starting in 7th or 8th grade – and I’m now 30. I just hope they keep true to the books. Anyone up for The Secret Circle onscreen?
I’m with you Al… LJ smith was the author i read over and over in high school!! I think the secret circle would be a GREAT show!!
claire please! twilight is not the first (or the best imo) vampire story out there. the vampire diaries came out in the early 90’s. L.J Smith is a fantastic author and it’s a shame that so many shallow people try to compare her books against that crap that stephenie meyer came up with.

OMG The Vampire Diaries is one of my favs series I know I will watch it! I hope it does well how can it not it’s not just one hot vampire but 2! That are not only brothers but fight!!! It doesn’t get much better than that!!!
i dnt really like the cast that much…ian is da only one thats hot…but paul as stefan dats a no no no…they can do way better then dat..n i dnt think nina will do such a good a job as elena not the greatest actress out there…i love the books..i hope the show is good if these are really the ppl casted…

I’m SOOOO excited! I was a HUGE fan of the Vampire Diaries 15 years ago (wow..has it been that long?) and I still own the books. I must’ve read them at least 10 times each. And I’m with the poster that says Elena should be blonde!!!
And making a show out of “Secret Circle” would be awesome too. Maybe they’ll wait and see how “Vampire Diaries” does.
i’m not into the CW shows anymore, but you can bet I’ll be watching this one! YAYYYY!!! I’m so excited!!! Can’t wait to see who they cast for Matt, Meredith and Bonnie.
Damon is my favorite. I had just read the books when I found out that it was becoming a T.V show. I can’t wait till’ this fall. So much vampire stuff coming out!!! New moon, now this.
I would not get to excited the CW doesn’t have the best track record for backing their Witch/Vampire shows. Just look how they screwed Buffy and Angel over not to mention how they totally ignored the last two seasons of Charmed! The books are great and would make an excellant show- I am just not going to invest to much energy into since my guess is the CW will cancel just when it gets GOOD!
I can’t wait and my friends can’t either!!! Yeah, I got some of my friends hooked on it and two of us are biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig TWILIGHT fans. But, I also LOVE this series A LOT!!! I just hope it works!!!
drew fuller (chris from charmed)would have been a suiting Stefan. I want Meredith to appear on the how early, they should at least stay faithfull to the characters, if anything else.

I hate the cast. The only okay one is Damon. They got the rest all wrong. I pictured Stefan with shoulder-length black hair. And the character who portrays Elena is completely misfitted. She is not blonde and she’s a bit to tan. She’ll have to put on a lot of make-up. I imagine Elena like Hayden Panettiere but more pale. Hope they follow through.
Did they not get the memo (or read the books) about Elena being blond, pale and blue-eyed? Great way to start the show…ruin my favorite series by casting the worst people possible.

I’m curious to see how it does. It seems like it would be an okay show. I would like to see CW give it a chance with a full season. I hate it when stations cancel shows before a season is complete, especially when the shows are good. I think the fact that it’s a popular series will bring in a decent amount of viewers.
I’ve never read the books, but I have friends who have read them and they like them. I think I’ll start reading them now.
I can’t WAIT! The Vampire Diaries were my bible in middle school! (I know 15 years is awhile JenM huh?) and I agree they are way better than Twilight-even though I liked Twilight

I read this series when I was 13. I loved these books. Way better than Meyers’ books. Too funny I can’t believe that is going to be a TV show.
I love the vampire dairies books!!!i also watched moonlight. i don’t think it will be better but i think it will be awesome. one thing i don’t like is the actors look nothing like the people(or vampires) in the book.

I can’t wait for this series to start. I read the Vampire Diaries before I read anything in the Twilight Saga and I have to say that L.J. Smith’s writing is much better
I wish they would have cast someone with blonde hair for Elena but from the clips I’ve seen Nina will probably do all right.

Someone mentioned the Secret Circle…OMG…that’s going back. I also read Smith when I was in the 6th or 7th grade and I’m now 27. This show is going to take me down memory lane!!! I should probably brush up on the Vampire Diaries being that it’s been so long…
Vimpire diaries looks really good to watch, can’t wait until it cames out. It will remain of Twilight, but i think it might be better than that.

I love the Vampire Diaries and I can not wait for it to come out. Twilight is totally number one but the Vampire Diaries it totally number two. The bad part is that the girl who plays Elena is originally blond but the new one is black haired but I think the Nina Dobrev can do a really great job. Paul Wesley is perfect for Stefan. First I thought Jensen Ackles could play Stefan but Paul is pretty hot. I really like the guy who plays Damon but I kinda imagined someone with a little bit longer, wavy hair like Jared Padalecki but Ian is really hot. i really can not wait for fall to start so the show can come on.
I’m so happy & surprised to hear that one of my all time favorite YA books is coming alive on screen! It would be awesome if they could do the same with LJ Smith’s “The Secret Circle” (just as long as they don’t butcher it)! “Vampire Diaries” – I can’t wait to watch…speeding down memory lane, indeed!

Elena is supposes to be blond and stefan id supposed to have curly/wavy hair down to his shoulders. and damon is supposed to be like WAY muscular. these characters dont really work for the series…cant wait for the next book to come out i miss stefan
My first thought when I saw the girl they cast as Elena was – What??!!?? But I can see how Kevin Williamson is going for people who can really act rather than just pretty faces (Rob P anyone?). I’ll suspend judgement until I see a few episodes – if she catches Elena’s spirit, then I can deal.
You are so totally right about many Twilight scenes being pulled from this series – and has anyone read the newest one? It gives Damon so much more depth. I am waiting impatiently for the next one to see what he does next.
i love twilight! alot of ppl are saying that stephenie stole scenes,if so i think vampire diaries will be kool! since cw is a local channel im blessed! still ’till i see the show twilight(new moon in the future)will be the vampire series number 1 in my heart.p.s. still think its gonna be cool.:)

I can honestly say that I’m going to have a packed fall season line-up this year. From New Moon coming out in Nov, to True Blood series (read all of them), football and now this. OMG! I’m in heaven!!
I do really hope that the CW does try to follow the books, but looks like a rocky start so far. I am currently finishing up the first book. /shrug we shall wait and see.

i think that damon is cute and stefan is sexi and i watch tha show every thursday and i really cant believe that damon would actually turned vicki because he new that she would not be able to resist the blood of humans and i am sorry for matt cause vicki is never cumin back and he mite still look for her…..
