Buffy Without Joss Whedon?

By , About.com GuideMay 26, 2009

Follow me on:

A Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie without Joss Whedon, Sarah Michelle Gellar or the rest of the absolutely fabulous cast of the hit TV show? It's like peanut butter without jelly, Disney World without Mickey Mouse, Willy Wonka without the Chocolate Factory.... well you get the idea. Believe it or not, the idea is being tossed around.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kaz and Fran Rubel Kuzui of Kuzui Enterprises, who directed and developed the original movie (and still hold all the rights), have reached out to Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment to develop a new movie about "the one girl in all the world with the strength and skill to fight the vampires." Joss Whedon, the creator of the highly popular television series, has not been contacted about getting involved in this project. The film will not be based on the popular television series, which means that the lovable Scooby gang characters will not be a part of the new Buffy universe.

Since Buffy ended back in 2003, fans have been begging for some sort of TV or motion picture that would catch up with those beloved characters, so why would anyone make a film that would alienate (and probably anger) a built-in audience of millions? Franchise. Vertigo and Kuzui are hoping to develop a film that would allow franchising opportunities in the future, which means a whole new Buffy, all new friends, vampires and demons.

This may have worked for the Star Trek franchise, but Buffy/Whedon fans are some of the most vocal and loyal fans I've ever known -- this will not go over well at all in the Whedonverse. What do you think? Sound off below!

Doing it without Joss would be wrong. He wrote the original movie. For goodness sake, he even wrote the book adaptation to the original movie when it came out in the first place, Buffy is his baby. I think a lot of people would be miffed about it. I know I wouldn’t be happy.

I know people would probably go see it because it was a buffy movie, but not as many as would if he was involved.

It will not be as big as it could be. Why do something like this to just mess with it. Want to talk about loyal; you would have a fan base that is unbelievable plus new people. Why start from scratch and upset people. It will not make nearly as much money as it could and from then on no network or studio will even consider the name Buffy. It will ultimately sign the end as far as productions are concerned

Star Trek had to reinvent itself (after 40 years & the death of some major actors, they needed to take a new route). Granted now that the Potentials have been empowered, they could have an offshoot storyline but their would be many more fans wanting their Buffy (I do). Afterall, there’s a popular graphic novel series continuing an 8th season. It should have the guidance of Joss to have that quality that the fans expect.

OMG!! Not another series movie resurrection without the original actors etc! If Harrison Ford can do it, at his age as well, then why can’t others follow suit. All sorts of great story lines involving the originals could work well alongside newcomers.

Original Buffy Senior (she’s not so old) plus a Buffy Junior etc. could work really well. Bit like how the characters from Smallville progressed.
