Audra McDonald Leaving Private Practice

By February 9, 2011

Follow me on:

Sam and Addison's love life has had its share of troubles, but the presence of the ex-wife has been in a word... awkward. It looks like the lovebirds are going to have one less distraction -- and one less best friend now that Naomi (a.k.a. Audra McDonald) is leaving town.

TV Line reports that the Private Practice star will leave the series at the end of the season so that she can be with her family, who are based in New York. McDonald, who spent years performing on Broadway (she is a four-time Tony award winner) before coming to the show, has been commuting from Los Angeles to New York for the last four years. Let's face it, a theater actress of this caliber belongs on the stage and with her family; we can hardly blame her for returning to her roots.

Fans surely have noticed that Naomi's presence on the show has been pretty minimal the last couple of seasons, so I don't think her exit will affect any of the current storylines. The actress told TV Line that she may even return from time to time, and series creator Shonda Rhimes confirms this news in a statement:

"We are so appreciative of Audra and her talents and look forward to having her return to Private Practice as often as possible. Audra has been a bicoastal commuter throughout our four seasons on the air, and, ultimately, we respect and appreciate her desire to spend more time with family in New York."

How would you like to see Naomi written out of the show? Would you rather see her find the love of her life and sail off into the sunset or have her leave for some amazing medical opportunity? Do you think her exit will complicate Sam and Addison's relationship or make it stronger than ever? Sound off below...

I’d love to see her do her own spinoff but something that can be filmed in NYC obviously. I think she should also finally find a man who can really appreciate just what a special woman she really is. She is amazingly strong and has come through a lot over the years that the show has been on. Perhaps a return to her roots of family practice but in a new setting where it’s an emerging idea might just be a way to retain her brilliant acting and presence. Ever since I first saw her as a young actress in Carousel I have just loved seeing her and hearing her sing is just absolutely thrilling!!! She can just light up the stage or any scene she is in.

Brilliant. Yes. The producers should give her her own spin off show in NYC with a whole new cast filmed in NYC. I would definitely watch that! I love her character and her boyfriend. They’re a great team.
