The world of acting is undoubtedly one of the toughest places to find success. Aspiring actors often spend years and years trying to score that one gig that will hopefully make them a household name and lead to bigger and better roles. In Hollywood, luck is everything, so imagine being a young actress who lands the role of a lifetime on one of television's hottest shows....
Such is the case with Maiara Walsh, a beautiful and talented young woman who now plays Carlos and Gaby's troubled niece, Ana Solis, on ABC's Desperate Housewives. I had the opportunity to chat with the very sweet and charming Maiara about how she got involved in acting, what to expect from her character on Desperate Housewives, favorite TV shows and whether she Tweets on Twitter....
Q: When did you decide to pursue acting?
Maiara: "I always liked it growing up, I was always in plays, but I really started pursuing it when I was 14."
Q: Who was the first big celebrity you met?
Maiara: "I guess it was all the Disney through the various events we had, like Kyle Massey and Miley Cyrus."
Q: If you weren't acting, what career path do you think you would have followed?
Maiara: "There are so many -- I like science, I think being a scientist would be fun. I like psychology and could see myself as a therapist. I also like astronomy. There are so many things I can see myself doing."
Q: How did the role of Ana Solis come to you?
Maiara: "I got a call to audition for Desperate Housewives and I went in and I believe I had about 3 auditions. I was guaranteed an episode in the season finale and they had a month to decide whether to pick me up for a series regular -- and they did. Needless to say, I was very, very excited."
Q: Tell us about your character...
Maiara: "She is a bit of a wild child. She and Gaby butt heads and will continue to butt heads. She's been bounced around from relative to relative. Her mom is in prison and she hasn't seen her dad since she was 3, so she definitely has some issues. She's decided that she is going to make things happen for herself and she'll do whatever it takes to get what she wants. I think one of the reasons she and Gaby butt heads so much is because they're so similar."
Q: What can you tell us about season 6 of Desperate Housewives?
Maiara: "Ana is going to continue testing Gaby's patience by acting up and misbehaving. In the first episode she has this really funny scene with Gaby in a club and she does something she's never done before... I can't tell you what it is, but it's really funny. She's a young girl who likes boys, so I think there will be some love mysteries and triangles."
Q: Which cast members do you hang out with?
Maiara: "Right now, most of my scenes are with Eva. It's been real nice getting to know her and bond with her. I think it's important to have that connection with the people you work with or you're going to show up for work miserable everyday. I got to know the Scavo twins when I was shooting the season finale and they were fun."
Q: Favorite TV Shows?
Maiara: "I don't watch much TV. I watch films more than anything else. I do watch Curb Your Enthusiasm, so I'm looking forward to the new season of that."
Q: Do you Twitter?
Maiara: "At this point, I don't Twitter. I'm not sure how to use it yet, but I think in the future I'll get around to it. I'm not huge into that internet scene."
Q: Harry Potter or Twilight?
Maiara: "Harry Potter. I've read and loved all of the books. I wish I could go to Hogwarts! I like the movies, I think they cast them pretty well."
Q: Do you have any projects in the works?
Maiara: "As of right now, I do not. I filmed something last year called The Prankster, which was an independent teen comedy film."
Q: What advice do you have for teens looking to break into the business?
Maiara: "Practice your craft. I think being in an acting class is very important. Like any other skill, you have to practice. This business can be so difficult, so you need to have determination, patience and a tough skin."
