'Glee' Character Profiles

By , About.com Guide

From Sue Sylvester to Coach Beiste, it can be difficult for new viewers to navigate their way through a large cast of characters. Get better acquainted with the cast of characters on Glee with our handy guide...

Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison)

New Directions wouldn't exist without Mr. Schuester, a Spanish teacher who was determined to get a glee club together to compete at a national level. Will used to be married to Terri and is engaged to Emma Pillsbury.

Rachel Berry (Lea Michele)

New Directions leading soprano and sings the lead in the majority of the songs performed on the show. Rachel has two fathers and her biological mother is Shelby Corcoran, whom she met in season one. Finn Hudson is the love of her life and the two got engaged in season three. Rachel dreams of being a superstar and has the kind of ambition that will likely get her to the top one day.

Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith)

Finn is McKinley High's best football player, but his heart is with New Directions... and most importantly, with Rachel Berry. Finn dated Quinn in season one and was led to believe he was the father of her baby. The two dated again in season two until he realized he was in love with Rachel. Finn is at a crossroads in his life and is undecided about his future plans.

Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch)

McKinley High's hilarious and outspoken cheerleading coach. Her hatred of Will runs deep and he is often the victim in one of her malicious efforts to oust New Directions from the school. However, deep, deep inside is a woman capable of kindness. Her sister was mentally challenged and the relationship she shared with her was touching. In season one, after New Directions lost at Regionals and were about to be broken up by Principal Figgins, Sue stepped in and saved the day. Any scene involving Sue Sylvester is guaranteed to be entertaining!

Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley)

A self-proclaimed Diva, Mercedes in my opinion, has the best voice of the group, yet she is often overlooked in favor of Rachel Berry. Sick of constantly being shoved to the back-burner, Mercedes joined Shelby's group The Trouble Tones until they lost at sectionals and she was convinced to rejoin New Directions. She briefly dated Sam, yet the two are clearly still in love with each other.

Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale)

Artie is the heart of New Directions. He may be wheelchair-bound, but he is the very definition of the term handy-capable. Artie dated Tina in season one and Brittany in season two. He discovered that he has a talent for directing when he was tasked with directing McKinley High's production of West Side Story.

Noah 'Puck' Puckerman (Mark Salling)

New Directions Mohawk-sporting bad boy. Puck got Quinn pregnant in season one and the two were together for a little while. He also dated Rachel for a short time in season one. Puck has a lot of growing up to do, but in the first three years, he has made big strides in the maturity department -- which included having a brief affair with Rachel's biological mother Shelby, the woman who adopted his baby girl.

Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron)

In season one, Quinn was the quintessential high school mean girl, captain of the cheerleading squad, dated the quarterback, etc... until she got pregnant and was kicked off the squad and then booted out of her parents home. She ultimately gave her baby up for adoption (Shelby adopted her) and went through a period of self-discovery. She was accepted to Yale University and plans to leave Ohio behind and start a new life.

Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer)

New Directions out and proud fashionista. After much teasing in the first two seasons, Kurt transferred to Dalton Academy, but ultimately returned to McKinley High. Like Rachel, Kurt has dreams of being a superstar. Kurt is dating Blaine Anderson -- and these two may very well be the cutest couple in school.

Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz)

Every school has one -- the unusual girl or boy who dresses the way they want and are comfortable in their own skin... this would be the best way to describe Tina Chang. She marches to the beat of her own drum and makes no apologies for being herself. Tina's beautiful voice is sadly, rarely used front and center. She dated Artie in season one, but dumped him for Mike Chang.
