An Interview with Nicholas Lea (Tom Foss, Kyle XY)

In a brilliant advertising campaign, ABC Family posed the question that had millions of viewers wondering -- Who is Kyle XY? This charming series captivated audiences of all ages, a rarity on television these days and fans are chomping at the bit to find out the truth about where Kyle comes from. Answers are coming and we won't have to wait long to find out who is Kyle XY!

During much of season one, Kyle was followed by a mysterious man named Tom Foss. We thought he was a bad guy until we learned that he had been fiercely protecting Kyle from an evil organization. I had the pleasure of speaking with the very charming Nicholas Lea, who portrays Tom Foss and managed to get some intriguing information about where the show is headed in season two.

How did the role of Tom come to Nicholas?

Living close to where the series was filming, Nicholas received a call about the role and jumped at the chance to portray such a versatile character. From the very beginning, he had been clued in on the scope of the character of Tom Foss, knowing all along that Tom wasn't some creepy bad guy who was stalking Kyle.

What can we expect from season two of Kyle XY?

Nicholas explained that season two will delve deeper into the mythology and origins of the mysterious Kyle. Tom Foss becomes a more pivotal person in Kyle's life and will continue to protect and work with him to fully understand and utilize his abilities.

At the end of season one, we saw another being with the initials XX. Tom is fully aware of this being and we'll soon learn where Tom stands with both XX and XY. Nicholas tells me that episode two is one of the best episodes of the series and the answer to Kyle's origins becomes quite clear by the end of the episode.

When asked if Tom will protect the Trager family once Kyle re-enters their lives, Nicholas told me that Tom will play an important role in protecting the family, but his first priority is keeping Kyle safe. Tom feels the need to work on redeeming his soul to make up for his shady past.

Nicholas on how long he expects his character to last on the series....

[laughs] "Well, I just filmed an episode yesterday, so I'm around for at least that long."

Does Nicholas feel a being such as Kyle XY could exist?

Without giving away the secret as to the origin of this character, Nicholas tells me that he feels anything is possible - even a being such as Kyle.

Is the Lea household watch Kyle XY?

You bet! Nicholas feels it's amazing that a show can appeal to such a varied audience. His 10-year-old enjoys the series as much as he does and attributes this to brilliant minds behind the show.

Nicholas on the best piece of advice he's been given....

"The best piece of advice I've been given is to be honest. Be honest in your work and in everything you do."
