"Pilot Part 1" Summary:
Jack wakes on an island after a plane crash. He takes charge, helping those who are injured, but he is also injured and asks Kate to stitch him up. (OAD 9/22/04) "Pilot Part 1" Synopsis
And So It Begins:
- The camera is close in on Jack's eye. This marks the first of many eyes that open to the camera.
- Shortly after the crash, Michael yells for Walt. Get ready, there is a lot of yelling for Walt in our future.
- Jack tells Hurley to stay with Claire and Hurley's response is, "Dude, I'm not going anywhere." This is the beginning of many "Dude"s that will come from Hurley.
- Jack has a flashback, remembering what happened on Flight 815. This is the beginning of many flashbacks for many characters.
- Kate tags along with Jack to the cockpit, thus beginning her pattern of wanting to be involved in everything.
- As they are about to go into the cockpit, Jack says, "Let's do this," which we'll hear often over the next six seasons.
It Will Come Back Around:
- Jack lies on the ground looking up at the trees. Later we'll see Locke in this same position and then finally Jack as he lies down for the final time.
- The first flashback that Jack has will be seen again in a flash-sideways, although things are slightly different.
- Jack tells Kate the story of how he let the fear in for 5 seconds. We see this later in the episode when Kate does the same thing after running from the monster. On Hydra island, Jack has Kate recite the story back to him so that he knows she is safe. We'll also see the actual surgery Jack is talking about in a later episode in a flashback.
Questions Raised by "Pilot Part 1" Answered:
- Why were they not rescued? The short answer is that they were 1000 miles off course, but we later learn that the island is hidden from the rest of the world.
- Who do the handcuffs belong to? Kate was being transported by a Marshal.
Questions Raised by "Pilot Part 1" Never Answered:
- Why is Vincent so mysterious? This was something that I thought would be answered, but I guess he was mysterious only to add suspense to the show.
- How did the smoke monster get his sounds and why do they sound so much like sounds Rose has heard in the Broncs?
- How did Hurley get his nickname?
I Wonder:
- Kate tells Jack that she sewed the drapes in her apartment. I wonder if she's talking about the apartment she shared with her husband, Kevin Callis. She was more domestic at that time than any other.
Character Masks:
- We see Jin being a jerk to Sun and Sun being very submissive to him.
- Locke sure is mysterious, but mostly creepy.
Real Character Shows Through:
- Jack shows his leadership qualities.
- Charlie goes to the cockpit with Jack and Kate hoping to recover his drugs.
Did You Notice?:
- After the crash, Hurley stands looking at the chaos. He must be thinking that he caused all of that with his cursed numbers.
- While Kate stitches Jack, he tells her the story of his first surgery as a resident. She says, "If that were me, I think I would have run for the hills." To which he replies, "I don't think that's true. You're not running now." Thing is, Kate is running. She's running from the Marshal and we all know that she tends to run away from her problems.
- Smokey seemed to want the survivors to know he was there right from the beginning. It seems he wanted them to fear him, especially when he killed the pilot, Seth Norris, who was not a candidate and was not even supposed to be on the flight.
