Writing the role of a mother on television can be a difficult task. No matter how you write the character, someone is going to challenge the validity of the role that particular mom plays. Here is a list of who I think are the best moms on television today.
1. Bree Hodge ('Desperate Housewives')
Over the course of the first three seasons of Desperate Housewives, I would never have given Bree a spot on this list, but as the show progressed the beautiful redhead has blossomed into a wonderful parent. Five years into the future, we see that Bree has finally accepted her son's homosexuality. Andrew is a vital part of Bree's business and in an effort to keep him close by, she even bought a house for him and his partner. Bree Van de Kamp-Hodge has come a long, long way.
2. Lynette Scavo ('Desperate Housewives')
Some people may see her as not the best example of a great mom, but lets face it, Lynette has given birth to three boys who many would term as the devil's spawn. Five years into the future, we learn that Lynette continues to do whatever she can to keep her badly behaved kids safe -- even if she has to bribe an older woman (who was having an affair with Porter) to leave town once in a while.
3. Kate Austen ('Lost')
We all know that Kate makes it off the island, but the biggest shock was that she is raising Claire's son Aaron as her own in the future. In her flashbacks, Kate was a woman on the run and incapable of settling down. As the future unfolds, we see a much different Kate -- a mother willing to do anything to protect her child (even if he is supposed to be raised by another). When it came time for Kate to go back to the island, she did the right thing and gave Aaron to Claire's mother for safekeeping.
4. Sarah Connor ('Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles')
Knowing her son is destined to save the world in the future is difficult in itself, but having to fend off futuristic robots takes the role of mother and protector to a whole different level. Sarah Connor will stop at absolutely nothing to insure the safety of her son -- even if she has to sacrifice her own happiness and, perhaps, her life.
5. Allison Dubois ('Medium')
Many mothers have reported feeling some sort of sensation when their kids are in trouble, but what if you could see when your kids are in trouble long before it manifests? Not only is Allison able to see trouble ahead, but her daughters have shown signs of sharing the same gift and may very well get themselves out of a bad situation in the years to come. Allison also plays the role of an everyday working mom trying to deal with schedules, school plays and other common responsibilities.
6. The 'Big Love' Moms
Three wives, one husband and a whole lot of children -- they may lead unconventional lives, but these moms love their children and the other wives children in a touching manner.
7. Hilda Suarez ('Ugly Betty')
Being a young mother isn't easy, and when you've got a son who is...well, how do we say this delicately....feminine, it certainly can present many challenges. Hilda Suarez just rolls with the punches and allows her son to just be himself, no matter what anyone else has to say about it.
8. Nicole Trager ('Kyle XY')
Being a psychologist has its advantages when it comes to dealing with teenagers, but Nicole Trager is the first to admit when she makes mothering mistakes. After taking in Kyle, the entire Trager family was turned upside down, but Nicole took it all in stride and has built an unbreakable family unit. And you just can't beat those heartwarming family moments! It's a shame this TV mom won't make the list next year as this fabulous show has been canceled by ABC Family.
9. Debbie Wilson ('90210')
Cindy Walsh on the original 90210 was one of those modern-day Carol Brady types, and Debbie Wilson carries on that tradition in the revamped zip code. She's not quite the goody-goody mom, and she seems to be much more hip than Cindy, but she is still a little happier than most mothers. Regardless, she deserves a spot on this yearly list and I believe she'll stay for as long as the show lasts on the CW.
