Best TV Moms

By , About.com Guide

Writing the role of a mother on television can be a difficult task. No matter how you write the character, someone is going to challenge the validity of the role that particular mom plays. Here is a list of who I think are the best moms on television today.

The Moms of 'Army Wives'

Being a mom is always a challenge, but adding the daunting task of trying put on a brave face for the sake of the children while their spouse is off at war is an incredibly difficult undertaking. Deployment, financial struggles, devastation, death -- this series has helped viewers understand and appreciate the realistic struggles every military family must face on a daily basis.

Alicia Florrick ('The Good Wife)

Infidelity is perhaps the worst thing that can happen in a marriage, but when it unfolds in the public eye, it becomes unforgivable. When Alicia Florrick's marriage was rocked by a sex scandal and her husband sent to prison, she put on a brave face, got herself a job and shielded her children as best she could. As a mother, she is honest with her children and doesn't insult their intelligence when presented with tough questions. Once she threw Peter out after learning of his affair with Kalinda, Alicia still shielded her children from the ugly facts, but managed to give them an explanation that didn't alienate their affections for their father. A classy move in my opinion.

Lynette Scavo ('Desperate Housewives')

Lynette has earned a spot on this list year after year and I believe will continue to do so as long as the show remains on the air. After giving birth to five children, Lynette is an old pro, but the most important thing she does for all us mothers out there -- she helps us accept that there is no such thing as a perfect mother. She makes mistakes we have all made and has given us an opportunity to laugh at our imperfections.

Stephanie Powell ('No Ordinary Family')

Imagine being a parent and having the power to run faster than the speed of light -- oh the things you could get done in just seconds! Stephanie had thrown herself into her career for years and neglected her husband and kids, so she decided to take the family on a vacation to reconnect with them, but they almost died in a plane crash in the Amazon. The plane crash turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to the Powell's when each of them developed an extraordinary ability shortly after they returned home. It ultimately brought them closer as a family as they tried to adjust to life as a superhuman all the while trying to keep it a secret from the rest of the world.

The 'Big Love' Moms

Three wives, one husband and a whole lot of children -- they may lead unconventional lives, but these moms love their children and the other wives children in a very touching manner. No matter what happens in their busy and hectic lives, family is the single most important thing to the Hendrick family and nothing can ever come between them... even the death of the family patriarch.

Cate Cassidy ('Life Unexpected')

After giving her daughter up for adoption, the last thing Cate Cassidy ever expected was to become the child's parent 16 years later. When Lux arrives on Cate's doorstep, her whole life is turned upside down. Although Cate has made many mistakes since Lux entered the picture, she has never thrown in the towel and is determined to be the mom Lux deserves, no matter how many sacrifices she has to make along the way. It's a shame the ratings didn't reflect the beauty of this show.
