Worst TV Drama Cancellations of the '00s

By , About.com Guide

The single most traumatic event in the world of television is when a network cancels a show. The fans feel the most helpless because other than organize a campaign, they really have no control over the network's decision to axe a show. We've seen some big shows get their pink slips over the last ten years, but we feel the following shows hit fans the hardest based on your feedback.

'Jericho' (Canceled in 2008)

After being resurrected following the biggest fan campaign in television history, it was a slap in the face when CBS put the show in its notorious "death slot" (Tuesdays at 10pm) and then canceled the series when it didn't perform well in the ratings. Roasted, toasted or unsalted -- no amount of peanuts could save the series a second time around.

'October Road' (Canceled in 2008)

After a very successful midseason run in its first year, ABC moved the popular drama to Monday nights and we watched as the ratings took a major nosedive. The network didn't waste any time in dumping this heartfelt drama. You would be hard-pressed to find a more dedicated and passionate fan than the "Roadies." 2008 was a particularly difficult year for cancellations, but these fans pulled out all the stops to try save their favorite show. When those efforts failed, these fans kept campaigning until ABC finally released the second (and final) season on DVD.

'Everwood'(Canceled in 2006)

When I think about well-acted and engaging television dramas, Everwood always comes to mind. With a cast of stellar actors and and equally impressive team of writers, there is no reason this show shouldn't have lasted more than four seasons. Once the fans realized the show would not be renewed for a fifth season, they quickly organized an event to campaign for the release of the series on DVD -- a Ferris wheel went up within view of the CW offices. The event even attracted some of the stars of the show. Sadly the last two seasons never made it to DVD.

'Moonlight' (Canceled in 2008)

We lost a lot of great dramas in 2008, and as the popularity of vampires hits unprecedented heights, I'd lay odds that CBS is kicking themselves for canceling this fantastic series. The fans certainly didn't take this one lying down and fought to the bitter end.

'Las Vegas' (Canceled in 2008)

The bloodbath of 2008 continued with the cancellation this popular NBC series. The warning signs presented themselves when the series was banished to Friday nights, followed by the exit of series stars James Caan and Nikki Cox. Although many fans saw the writing on the wall early on, we still can't get over the fact that NBC didn't allow the writers enough time to pen a satisfying ending. Shame on NBC for not giving fans the closure they deserved.

'Kyle XY' (Canceled in 2009)

Before the show even premiered, we were intrigued by the ads showing a teenage boy without a belly button. The series set debut records for ABC Family and ultimately landed a spot on ABC's primetime schedule in its first season. Although its sophomore season saw a ratings drop, the series had built a solid fan base. The ratings continued to slide, the fan base did not -- but ABC Family decided to cancel this heartwarming series anyway. Fans started a "Save the Tub" campaign, but the cancellation was final. One of the producers of the series did offer fans some answers as to how the series would have progressed had it not been canceled: Kyle XY Answers

'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip' (Canceled in 2007)

When you have a series with some of the most talented stars on television combined with a staff of equally talented writers, one would think that show would be a huge hit, right? Wrong. Although this series carried a growing and dedicated fan base, it never grabbed enough of those elusive Nielsen viewers for NBC to justify the cost.

'Roswell' (Canceled in 2002)

When I think of the word "cult classic," Roswell is always the first television show that comes to mind. About halfway through the first season, fans learned that the show was in imminent danger of cancellation. Fans from all over the country organized one of the first internet campaigns, sending thousands of bottles of Tabasco Sauce to the WB offices. The campaign was successful and the series was renewed for another season. When the WB canceled the show, fans sent thousands of bottles to the UPN offices (they had just acquired Buffy from the WB) and the network grabbed the show from the WB and it aired for one last season. Several years following the end of the show, many fan sites were going strong -- now that's dedication!
